We have all seen a USA President or two, enter with flags waving, and band playing with all present, in a sort of hypnotic state of -- "at attention".  Why? Because, flags command attention. They move, they snap, they flutter......they seem to give off -- an aura, or to be breathing

Decorative flags can bring order and command attention in your outdoor living space. Themed flag placements, can create a very exciting ambiance to your garden scene. Here are some  themes to consider. For an international flare, the flags and banners of different nations, these can be pared with flora, or other garden decorations such as fountains and ponds. If you have plantings that are unique to certain countries, match them up with the appropriate country. They can evoke exotic locations, like Tahiti, Singapore or Bangkok.

 

A  flower flags theme, lends itself to some very pleasing aspects these can be placed near trees using poles, stands or brackets, standing out from the roof. Bright red flower flags against evergreens are gorgeous, like a red rose and carnation combination. Place flag poles along side the beginning of a foot path, that leads to or is lined with flower beds, for dramatic entrance appeal.

 

Some other themes to consider women with attitudes, flags showing ladies in various poses, of course, near flower planters or beds. How about a patriotic venue, with different historical and military banners, place them alone a walkway or standing out from the patio or deck, beautiful, as they muster to attention.

 

Flags can add a great deal to existing garden features. Place a flag with birds or fish near a fountain or pond. There are two basic methods to decorative flag placement, match the colors to the flora, or for a more dazzling approach, use contrasting colors, for a bold look.

 

On holidays, decorative flags can add immensely to the festive spirit. There are flags featuring everything from Santa Claus to Valentine hearts. For Halloween, the second largest holiday now, add bright orange banners with cats, witches and pumpkins to the front of your home, they make a very keen presentation as they ruffle to the movement of ghosts, as treat-or-treaters arrive.

 

Consider lighting up some or all your flags, for a beautiful evening setting. The constantly fluttering light add a mystical feel to any warm summer BBQ. The standard position for decorative flags is a 45 degree angle, however hanging them more like a banner, horizontally allows for a greater display, since they will often hang straight down. This is accomplished using  fixed  brackets or a pole.

 

Flags can be used as a sort of  waving welcoming mat when placed near the main entrance to your home, with one on each side of the door, or the entrance-way porch. These can be changed according to the season or holiday, use seasonal or holiday colors. Flags add a very festive feel wherever they are placed, so they naturally brighten things up to any holiday spirit.

 

You might want to keep some flags in reserve for special occasions, flower flags work great here. They will enhance any garden or backyard event. Place then near the dining or outdoor cooking areas, a nice bonus, if there is a breeze they are very helpful in warding off flying insects.
